Anonymous asked: Do you think a pbd could help with acne? People always tell me to use all these different cleansers, creams, etc. and none of them work and its frustrating. I do admit my diet isn't the best and I eat some processed foods and only a little bit of fruits/veggies, but I also don't know where to start in creating a healthier diet. Help please! :)
Oh boy you came to the right person with this one! I have struggled with my skin for the past decade, but in recent years it’s been better then ever! The answer is YES YES YES!!! Adopting a plant based diet was the BEST thing I ever did for my skin! I’ve tried ever cream, wash, scrub, mask, and ointment you can think of to clear up my skin and NOTHING worked no matter how diligent I was with it. Then about 2 years ago I found a book called The Beauty Detox Solution by Kimberly Snyder and it completely revitalized my view of how the body works, and how it sustains our beauty. I will try to break down how she explained it and then I’ll offer my own personal tips. I’m not a professional but I can definitely speak from experience.
(By the way, I know some people can eat total junk and never wash their faces and have perfect skin. But that has never been the case for me. The ONLY thing that helped was changing my diet and lifestyle.)
So Kmberly coined the term “beauty energy.” Basically, our bodies only have so much energy each day to get all it’s tasks done. If you eat a really crappy diet that is heavy in processed foods, dairy, meat and other junk, it could take up to 80% of your body’s total energy supply just to digest the food you are eating. (Plus, the foods don’t have many beautifying vitamins and minerals.) Our bodies take care of the most essential tasks first, before they get to the superfluous. Our bodies have to digest food, pump blood, fight illness, heal wounds, etc. before they can focus on clearing up our skin, strengthening our hair and nails, making wrinkles disappear, etc. So the goal is to achieve really efficient digestion so that your body has more energy to give you beautiful smooth skin!
Many experts also believe that our faces tell a story about what is going on inside our bodies. Blemishes, wrinkles, etc are the body’s way of communicating an internal problem. For instance, acne along the jaw might signify a hormonal imbalance or blockage in the large intestine. Try looking into face mapping!
So the best tips I can give you that worked for me:
-Quit dairy!!!! Within days of giving up dairy my skin cleared! And when I slipped up in the beginning, the acne re-appeared right away. This is the single most effective tip I have. Switch to almond milk, coconut yogurt, nutritional yeast, and other dairy alternatives if you still crave those things.
-Hydrate!!! Drink tons of water, especially lemon water. Eat hydrating foods in abundance such as raw fruits, greens, veggies, and herbs. Your body needs to be properly hydrated to function properly, let alone give you perfect skin.
-Green smoothies for breakfast! Green smoothies are so quick to make and a great way to get loads of greens into your diet. Plus, the blended fruits+greens drink is super cleansing and helps clean out your colon when you drink it on an empty stomach. A clean colon is the key to clear skin, I swear.
-Lots of raw food in general. Raw foods are living foods. They are your friend. Greens and fruits and veggies in abundance!!
-Proper food combining. Look for a chart on google. I’m not always perfect with this (I mix bananas and sweet fruits, for example). But the most important rule is to eat fruits, green smoothies, etc on an empty stomach, These raw foods are quickly digested (like 30 min) and will ferment if they have to sit on top of some sandwich that takes 2 hours+ to break down.
-High carb, low fat. Eating too much peanut butter and other fats could lead to break outs. Aim for 80% carbs, seriously. Our bodies run on carbs. You will also have way more energy eating this way. And get those carbs from fruit, fibrous veggies, etc not just bread and cereal.
-Fermented food! Sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir, coconut yogurt, etc have living digestive enzymes which help break down the waste in your gut. This waste is what it sucking up all your beauty energy. Eat them on an empty stomach or right before a meal. Try to eat something fermented a couple times a week if possible.
-Avoid chemical skincare products. Try to use the most natural things possible. I like to make DIY concoctions such as: turmeric+water mask, rose water+lemon juice toner, coconut oil moisturizer, lavender oil moisturizer, cucumber slices to reduce redness, avocado mask, aloe vera moisturizer, etc. Keep it as natural as possible!
-Get a good pillowcase, and make sure you wash it frequently. Seriously! Your face is all up on that thing when you sleep.
-Certain “skin detox” herbal teas have been very helpful for me!
-Dry brushing. This helps your overall circulation, which is very important for good skin. Brush your whole body in long sweeping motions always moving the brush toward your heart. This really does help your skin glow!
-Colonics or enemas are quite helpful. Cleanse the colon!
-Let your skin breathe. When I stopped wearing powder on my face every day, it started to clear up and my pores shrunk. Whenever it is possible have a clean make-up free face. This makes a huge difference. And if you are gonna wear makeup on your face, make sure your brushes are very very clean.
-If you have access to one, sit in a sauna with a clean face. If not, boil water in a squeaky clean pot, put a towel over your head, and place your face over the pot. All the steam will open up your pores and help you sweat out the toxins. Wash your face right after!
-Positive attitude! I am a firm believer in the power of positive thought. What we think, we become. What we tell our bodies repeatedly becomes truth. Our bodies listen to our thoughts on a cellular level. If I am always saying “I’m so tired” or “I’m so sore,” my body listens to that and is forced to oblige. Likewise, if I’m always thinking about how bad my skin is, my body will confirm my thoughts and give me bad skin. I’m serious about this! I tell myself all the time now that I have clear, beautiful, smooth, radiant skin! It can’t hurt to try, right?
-Maybe try a juice cleanse if you can afford it. This will help kick start your plant based diet! I don’t have a juicer and can’t afford a 3-day cleanse, but I’m eager to try!
-Arugula, onion, garlic, and apple cider vinegar are good food to eat for acne.
I hope this has helped even a little bit! I have felt your struggle for way too long, and I know how frustrating it is. So I really want to help you!! I cannot recommend The Beauty Detox Solution enough. It has been so incredibly helpful for me. Kimberly explains it all so much better the I can!! Get that book now!! It is my bible.
